Plein Air Painters of America: Kathleen Dunphy | Erica Jacobsen | Chris Morel | Michael Obermeyer I Off-site Workshop I Oil
Join the Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA) for a rare opportunity to paint in “Dixon Country” alongside four of PAPA’s Signature Members. This biannual destination workshop, offered through Scottsdale Artists’ School, is unlike any other—thanks to its unique format, expert instruction, collaborative spirit, and the inspiring location.
The 2026 workshop will take place May 18–22 in Mt. Carmel, Utah, at the historic Maynard Dixon property, home, and studio—now part of the Thunderbird Foundation Gallery. Participants will explore the dramatic landscapes that deeply influenced Dixon’s work. As a special bonus, PAPA’s national exhibition opens just days earlier on May 16, and attendees are encouraged to join the celebration.
Open to artists of all skill levels and working in various mediums (including acrylic, gouache, and watercolor—though demos will be in oil), this five-day experience includes:
• Monday, May 18 – Instructor-led visual presentations and a private,
guided tour of the Dixon home and studio.
• Tuesday-Friday, May 19–22 Four full days of outdoor painting instruction amidst the stunning scenery.
Participants will rotate through two instructor teams:
• Michael Obermeyer and Kathleen Dunphy
• Chris Morel and Eric Jacobsen
The workshop will emphasize essential principles of plein air painting—composition, drawing, value, and color—while helping you develop confidence and strengthen your personal style. Expect individual guidance, daily demonstrations, and a dynamic learning environment.
PLUS, three major bonuses:
1. PAPA’s National Exhibition Opening (May 16) – View outstanding work and mingle with over 35 PAPA Signature Members.
2. The Wet Paint Show – Featuring freshly painted work from the area,
displayed in Dixon’s original studio.
3. An In-Depth Tour – Explore Maynard Dixon’s life and legacy through his home, studio, and surrounding grounds.
Please Note: Scottsdale Artists’ School cancellation policies apply.
Founded in 1986, the Plein Air Painters of America started as a small group of artists dedicated to painting the landscape directly from life. Today we have 40 active members who participate in annual gatherings, museum exhibitions, and Master-level workshops. www.p-a-p-a.com
