BEAUX ARTS '08 April 26, 2008 View auction online!

“Beaux Arts 08,” SAS’ annual fine arts auction and entertainment gala, begins at 5:30 p.m., April 26, 2008, on the School’s grounds in the Art District in downtown Scottsdale.

“If you are passionate about art, Beaux Arts 08 is the place to indulge that passion,” said Janie Russo, Beaux Arts chairwoman. “The evening will be an energetic celebration of fine art, cuisine and music.”

In addition to being SAS’ major annual fundraiser, Beaux Arts 08 celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Scottsdale Artists’ School, one of the nation’s premiere traditional art institution. “This year’s guest of honor is Dr. Ginger Renner, author, expert on western art, and a woman who has contributed much over the years to the success of the Scottsdale art community and to the growth of Scottsdale Artists’ School,” Russo said.

Included among the fund-raising activities of Beaux Arts 08 are silent and live auctions of more than $260,000 in original fine art donated by 200 of the country’s leading traditional artists. In addition, an award-winning sculpture by renowned cowboy artist John Coleman, valued at $3,700, will be raffled off during the evening.

Tickets to the Beaux Arts gala are $150 for open seating and $175 for reserved seating, with tables of ten available for $1,750. Raffle tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100 (holder of the winning raffle ticket need not be present to win). Food will be provided by Santa Barbara Catering Company, with the James Linton Classical Guitar Trio providing musical entertainment.

YOUTH ACADEMY SUMMER CAMPS START JUNE 2, 2008

Kids ages 6-8, 9-14, and High School students experience new and imaginative ways of expressing creativity through the wonderful world of art under the guidance of professional artists during summer break at the Youth Academy of Scottsdale Artists’ School.

Summer Camps start June 2 from 9am to 3pm. “These workshops provide creative opportunities in a stimulating environment where children and teens explore their imaginations and express their unique self through the visual arts”, says Carrie Curran, director of Youth Academy. Children will learn drawing, painting, mixed media and sculpture in the working studios of Scottsdale Artists’ School, located in historic LaLoma School in the heart of the city’s arts district.

Audubon Art Classes for Bird Lovers

Scottsdale Artists' School is offering 2 special classes created for Audubon Society members this October. Birds in Watercolor will be October 4 and 11 and Introduction to Field Sketching will be October 18 and 25. Each class is $150. Registration is open now! GREAT ARTISTS IN GREAT PLACES: 2008 On-location Workshops

Painting and Drawing the Horse, Robertson, Wyoming
June 16 - 20, 2008

In this unique workshop, Jim Norton, member of Cowboy Artists of America, invites artists to his cabin in Robertson, Wyoming, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Artists will work closely with Norton each day while painting and drawing the horse in plein air, and will spend evenings and meals together talking about art, the creative process, and learning to “see.” A live horse model will be available throughout the workshop, and students will learn how to accurately portray the horse outdoors in a variety of situations. Workshop content will include an in-depth study of horse anatomy using a life-size horse skeleton, how light and color in the horse’s environment affects its appearance, and much more. Held at the artist’s Corning studio, this workshop focuses on still-life and portrait painting techniques. Using modern alkyd and oil paints, Buechner shares traditional systems in use since the 15th century. By separating line, form and color into distinct stages and by glazing, scumbling, and impasting, student will explore optical quality of multi-layer painting with a limited palette. Creating powerful, colorful and realistically honest plein air paintings will be the focus of this workshop as Johnson and his students explore the indescribable beauty of Oatlands Historic House and Gardens, with its stately mansion, 360-acres of rolling hills, exquisite gardens and more than 200 years of American history and culture. Johnson’s emphasis will be on the use of the brushstroke to depict form and depth, capture the true color of the landscape, and maintain the painting’s freshness and life. Included in this specially-arranged workshop will be demonstrations and individual critiques. Students will begin 8-10 canvases. In addition to painting at this National Trust Historic Site near Leesburg, Virginia, students will have the opportunity to visit galleries and other sites of interest in the surrounding countryside.

Students will enjoy a week of beautiful set-ups and good fun as they develop skills painting the model outdoors in this picturesque fishing village. Cowichan Bay’s harbors, gardens, small farms and vineyards provide the perfect setting for Nancy Chaboun’s vignetted painting style. Focus will be placed on the critical elements of a well-designed painting such as placement, values, edges and brushwork. Students will want to arrange to spend the weekend exploring the charming town when they are finished painting!

The figure is the inspiration to improve color, drawing skills, seeing values and edges, and understanding their relationships to each other. Narrative Ceramic Portrait Sculpture, Fallbrook, California

Narrative portrait sculpture tells a story about the sitter, and has been used throughout history to convey such attributes as status and power or to create satirical caricatures. Students in this workshop will learn the technical aspects of making a portrait sculpture, as well as how to purposefully manipulate the form to express meaning. Mapel will demonstrate the traditional hollow building technique of slab construction, while discussing the history of the narrative portrait. Students will finish their pieces with underglazes and their work will be fired to take home.

This workshop will be conducted for students who would want to improve their color, composition and value skills. In this unique and challenging workshop, students will learn how to paint nocturnal landscapes en plein air. Van Stein’s experience and enthusiasm for this subject will help students use the limited light sources available at night (including the full moon) to concentrate on subtle value shifts in dark conditions, and how to simplify their compositions to create interesting designs. Students will also learn techniques for working at night, including how to position the easel and palette for changing light conditions, mixing a palette in the dark and how to accurately capture the colors of the moon and moonlight. Note: This class will meet at Art Campus at Fallbrook on Monday, October 13 at 5:30pm. On October 13 and 14, class will last from 6pm to midnight. THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST JURIED FINE ART SHOW AND SALE Artists' Reception Thursday October 16, 2008 5-7 pm

Scottsdale Artists’ School will showcase the very best art created by its students in its annual The Best and the Brightest Juried Fine Art Show and Sale. Featuring paintings, drawings and sculpture from professional as well as undiscovered artists, the annual juried show is considered a not-to-miss by collectors and enthusiasts. The show runs from October 16 through November 18, 2008 with an artists’ reception Thursday, October 16, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

All artists who have taken classes at Scottsdale Artists' School within the past three years are eligible to enter. Call-to-artists will be mailed out to eligible students in mid-June.

Now in its 24th year, the show will offer for sale more than 100 works of art selected from over 300 entries submitted by students. Juried categories include oil painting, watercolor, pastel/drawing, and sculpture. Prices range from $200 to $5,000.

Hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm weekdays and 9 am to 4 pm Saturdays. Admission is free and open to the public.
