James Coulter received a BFA in Oil Painting from Arizona State University in 1981 and has since studied with master painters at the Scottsdale Artists’ School. He also graduated from the Certified Teaching program at the University of Phoenix in 1998. James won the Southwest Art Magazine Emerging Artist Award at the Sonoran Arts Show in 2004. He received the Phippen Museum Foundation Award for museum quality work in 2000, and many other awards. His work has been published in Southwest Art Magazine numerous times. James learned a lot about himself and his painting when in 1998 he sold his business and most of his belongings to go on the road in a travel trailer as a full-time plein air painter. He spent years camping out in the mountains and by the oceans of the southwest painting almost every day.
