Scottsdale Artists' School is located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale in the historic Loloma school building. Downtown Scottsdale is filled with the spirit of both the old and new west, with cultural, culinary, and recreation opportunities for all. Art lovers won't want to miss Scottsdale's ArtWalk, held every Thursday night in the Gallery and Restaurant District. In addition to more than 120 fine art galleries, Downtown is home to unique shops, salons and spas, and restaurants offering every type of cuisine imaginable, and one of the finest upscale shopping malls in the country, Scottsdale Fashion Square. Scottsdale offers something for everyone, all within walking distant (or a short, free, trolley ride) of the School.
SPECIAL NOTE FOR TRAVELING WITH ARTIST MATERIALS:
Because of increased security, traveling with paints and other materials can be difficult. Follow these guidelines:
1) ALWAYS check with your individual airline and the TSA website to be sure you are following their rules.
2) Remember you may not carry on any liquids (paint counts) in larger than 3oz containers. You may not carry on any item which resembles a weapon (palette knife, sculpture tools etc).
3)You may not bring solvents or other flammable liquids on the plane, either carry on or checked. You may not bring items which have previously held solvents and still contain fumes (turp cans).
4) Oil paints are generally vegetable based, and do not contain solvents, so they are not flammable enough to be a problem on the plane. To be safe, print out the Materials Safety Data Sheets (available at the manufacturers' websites) to prove your paints are not flammable. You might also want to avoid calling your paints "paints" and instead call them "artist pigments" so you don't raise a red flag to the security officers.
5) If you are concerned, students are ALWAYS welcome to ship materials to the School in advance of their workshops. Simply mark your package clearly with your name, the workshop instructor's name, and date of workshop, and we will hold your package for you. There are several nearby companies that can help ship your materials home, including FedEx and UPS.
